Nanjiseom Beach
Scenic Site #3. Nanjiseom Beach

About Nanjiseom Beach

Enjoying sunbathing, rafting and fishing on shore rocks at the same place

Namjiseom was given its name due to the abundant growth of orchids and gromwells. You can get to this island by taking a ferry from the Dobido Dock. As the ferry sails toward Daenanjiseom Island, you will be overwhelmed by the splendid scenery of an archipelago of the West Sea, and while looking at the islands in various sizes as well as the fascinating rock forms, you will feel as though you are actually on a tour cruise. As you become immersed in the beauty of the archipelago, you will soon reach a sandy beach surrounded by a pine forest in a half-moon shape.

Nanjiseom Island has well-developed sandy beaches and relatively shallow water depth, making it an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming and water sports. The island can be reached after a 30-min ferry ride, and the beaches are relatively less crowded compared to the beaches found on the mainland. This is why many families with children come here for a quiet summer vacation. The island also attracts fishing enthusiasts with an opportunity to fish from the rocks on the beautiful shores.

There is a youth training center located behind the beach. The youth training center has 33 guest rooms, which can accommodate around 300 people in total, in addition to an education center, a sports complex and a training facility. The training center offers a special “sea rafting” program in summer and allows the visitors to enjoy the summer in diverse ways.

Nanjiseom Island, a sanctuary for migratory birds

Daenanjiseom Island is a habitat for endangered species including prickly waterlilies and rugosa roses, and one can find oystercatchers, designated as Natural Monument No. 326, on the stores. As such, it is a clean area with a relatively pristine natural environment that serves as a sanctuary for wild plants and animals. It also has a well-developed tidal flat, where Manila clams and oysters are found in abundance, making it a perfect habitat for oystercatchers. Oystercatchers – as one can probably assume based on their name – primarily feed on oysters, and they use their long and sharp beaks to break open oysters and clams.

In addition to the oystercatchers, ducks and geese – although fewer in number in comparison – arrive on Nanjiseom Island to last the winter. The island is an excellent stopover for migratory birds as it provides plenty of prey to feed on in the tidal flat area and is surrounded by uninhabited islands.
