The Sunrise Festival is held to reflect on the passing year and celebrate the beginning of a new year, while wishing for success in the coming year as the sun rises over the horizon.

Waemok Village and Hanjin Hannaru, where the Sunrise Festival takes place, are located on the northernmost tip of Chungcheongnam-do Province. They are also found on the northernmost coastline of Dangjin, which is a ria coast where you can watch the sun rise over the horizon of the West Sea. Because the land mass extends outward to the north, similar to Ttangkkeut Village of Haenam, you can enjoy a stunning view of the sun rising above and setting below the horizon on the west coast. A great place to watch the sunrise is the peak of Seongmunsan Mountain, where you can see the sun rising between Yongmuchi of the Port of Janggo and Gukhwa Island. While the sunrise seen from the east coast can be described as magnificent and spectacular, the sunrise on the west coast appears more exquisite and romantic, as the red glow of the sun colors the sea, creating “fire pillars” on the water. During sunset, the fieriness of sun that is reminiscent of a furnace gradually subsides, and as you watch the darkness sets across the horizon and the sea, you’ll feel as though you’re begin immersed into the seawater. You can watch the sunrise and sunset in Waemok Village and Hanjin Hannaru at least 180 days a year. Numerous people visit the area in July to watch the sun rise above Gukhwado Island and in January to see it rise above the Port of Janggo.
